Hospital Care Services, started in 1997, features the expertise of 19 internal medicine physicians who care for most of Forrest General's non-specialist inpatients, as well as the majority of its "short-stay observation" patients. Hospitalists are full-time hospital-based physicians who are available 24 hours a day to ensure that patients are admitted quickly, tests and treatments are ordered promptly, and the patient's regular physician is informed of progress, regardless of how far away they may be. Hospital Care Service physicians give the patient the benefit of having a doctor readily available at all times, and gives the patient's regular physician a direct link to the patient during their time in the hospital.
