Forrest General offers vascular and cardiovascular surgery, and is committed to providing leading-edge technology, placing Forrest General as a leader in quality vascular care for south Mississippi.
Forrest General is fortunate to feature the services of the only two fellowship-trained vascular specialists in the area, Dr. Lewis E. Hatten, Dr. Keith Thompson, and Dr. Bryan Sellers, who are working to advance the minimally invasive treatment of major aortic trauma and treating ruptured aneurysms with stent grafts. These physicians and their staff also place a strong emphasis on early diagnosis of vascular disease, which can often be a silent killer.
Forrest General's state-of-the-art Vascular Suite
Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg has a long tradition of offering state-of-the-art technologies to provide the best possible care for patients. That tradition continues through Forrest General's state-of-the-art Vascular Suite, the only one of its kind in Mississippi that is equipped to perform hybrid surgeries, or those including both minimally-invasive and open procedures.
This suite, offering high-definition imaging, has the technology to provide any needed peripheral non-cardiac vascular procedure, including minimally-invasive procedures for leg or neck artery blockages such as angioplasty and stenting. These procedures involve using tiny balloons or mesh tubes to open narrowed or blocked arteries, improving or restoring blood flow. Some patients may require more invasive procedures in order to repair damaged vascular tissue, which may not be determined until the surgeon has begun or completed the minimally-invasive procedure. In years past, a patient would be required to go home, usually visit another doctor, and then return for the additional procedure on another day. With this suite, that process is now a thing of the past for most patients. This suite is one of a kind in the state in its ability to comprehensively manage vascular disease.
The most common procedures performed in this suite involve fixing blockages in leg arteries, referred to as Peripheral Arterial Disease (P.A.D.), repairing aortic aneurysms, or bulges within the artery wall that can rupture and cause bleeding, as well as carotid surgery and stenting for patients with neck artery blockages. These procedures are performed by a specialized team composed of physicians, operating room and nursing staff, which forms a cohesive vascular team able to perform all vascular procedures at a moment's notice.
