Forrest General has a long history of excellence in cardiac and vascular care:

  • In 1968, Forrest General Hospital established a Coronary Care Unit (CCU). Since then, Forrest General's comprehensive cardiac care program has become one of the region's leading heart centers. Skilled and dedicated doctors perform more than 5,500 cardiac procedures each year, helping improve the lives of many south Mississippians.
  • In 1978, the hospital's first cardiac catheterization laboratory was established, which now performs an average of 350 procedures a month.
  • Cardiovascular surgeons performed Forrest General's first open heart surgery in 1985. Today, more than 7,465 Forrest General patients have undergone open-heart surgery.
  • Forrest General performs more than 500 interventional balloon and stent procedures each year, exceeding American Heart Association angioplasty guidelines, which suggest hospitals should not offer angioplasty unless the facility performs at least 200 a year.
